How secure is data kept at Google?
We are often asked: How secure is my data in Google Drive? Well the answer is: pretty damn secure!
Here are is a bullet point summary from the whitepaper found here: https://cloud.google.com/files/Google-CommonSecurity-WhitePaper-v1.4.pdf
- Your data is spread across multiple servers, across multiple data centres across the globe. So if anything happens to a server or data centre your data is still perfectly safe.
- The data centers are segregated from general office and public areas.
- High resolution security cameras use video analytics and other systems to detect and track intruders.
- Additional security controls such as thermal imaging cameras, perimeter fences and biometrics are used.
- The facilities are routinely patrolled by security guards who may use bicycles, Segways and T3 motion scooters.
- Each data center has a serious UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) system to provide power, then fails over to diesel generators in case of power outage.
- The Google Security Team actively scans for security threats using intensive automated and manual penetration efforts, quality assurance processes, software security reviews and external audits.
- They have top notch network security.
Google is a big target and they aren’t impenetrable. However, you need to ask yourself the question: Is my data safer with Google or in my office?
